Flagstaff Lodge is a 1912 villa providing luxury boutique accommodation in the heart of charming Russell. Featuring contemporary style, NZ art, delicious local wine & food with relaxed, personal attention from your hosts.

The lodge offers four spacious ensuite rooms and a guest lounge – each uniquely styled – a relaxing courtyard and a boutique day spa offering massage and beauty treatments using premium Thalgo and OPI products.

The entire lodge is available for group or exclusive bookings.

Fully restored and modernised, Flagstaff Lodge & Day Spa is also steeped in history.  The lodge is named after a famous period in the early 1840’s in which Maori chief Hone Heke Pokai, several times cut down the British flagstaff standing on top of nearby Flagstaff/Maiki Hill.  Following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, Hone Heke became concerned by developments which he felt were not in the spirit of the Treaty and were disadvantaging Maori and so took action.  The attacks on the flagstaff ultimately resulted in the battle of Kororareka (Russell) in 1845 which resulted in the fleeing of the residents and serious damage to the town.
